A new office of Secretariat of the Conference on Interaction and Confidence Building Measures in Asia (CICA) has been officially opened by the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan Erlan Idrissov.

Taking part in the event were CICA Executive Director Gong Jainwei, as well as heads and members of CICA members` delegations participating in a meeting of the Special Working Group and CICA Senior Officials Committee.

“We should be proud our organization has been successfully operating for over 20 years. Over these years, the CICA has established itself as a reputable and sought after forum aimed at addressing pressing issues of global and regional agenda,” E. Idrissov noted.

According to the Minister, the CICA today is one of them most authoritative intergovernmental forums in Asia, which is consisted of 26 states, 8 observing countries and several international organizations.

The idea of convening the CICA was first proposed by the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev, October 5, 1992, at the UN General Assembly. The driving motive for this initiative was the desire to create an effective institution on strengthening cooperation and trust by elaborating common approaches towards promoting peace, security and stability in Asia.

“It was encouraging that the idea of the President N.Nazarbayev has crystallized and transformed into an effective forum to promote peace and stability in Asia. Together we have set big goals, and the CICA potential has sufficiently strengthened to achieve these goals,” the Minister stressed.

Congratulating on the 10th anniversary of the CICA Secretariat, E. Idrissov expressed gratitude to the CICA management and staff for the efforts to promote the CICA activities and wished them new achievements and success.

Gong Jianwei also praised the CICA activities on strengthening the spirit of cooperation and trust in Asia, underscoring the growing activity of the member states. Having noted decent conditions created by Kazakhstan for the Secretariat activities in Astana, G.Jianwei expressed gratitude to the country`s leadership and the Ministry of Foreign Affairs for the continued support.
