"The structure of the country’s economically active population is characterized by a high proportion of self-employed – 24% with low income, of which 42% have only secondary or primary education. The number of self-employed and unemployed with incomes below 60 thousand tenge is 853 thousand people; 716 thousand of them live in rural areas. We believe that this category of citizens can become an additional source of developing small and medium-sized businesses,” – Timur Suleimenov said during the Government hour at the Majilis of the Parliament.

According to the Minister, from the total number of the population, more than 3 million people are employed in the small and medium business (SME) sectors. According to the results of last year, the number of active SMEs amounted to 1.1 million, which in 9 months produced products worth 11.2 trillion tenge.

The share of small and medium businesses in GDP is 24.9%. The Head of State tasked to bring this figure to 50% by 2050.

“According to global statistics, only 12% of the world's population have skills for doing business. Simple calculations show that today a third of Kazakhstan's economically active population is engaged in small and medium-sized businesses. Thus, fulfilling the Presidential instructions should not be implemented by the formal growth of the number of enterprises, but by increasing the quality of manufactured products, the services provided by operating businesses,” – T. Suleimenov said.
