Minister of Defence Colonel-General Saken Zhasuzakov took part in today’s meeting of the Council of the CIS Defence Ministers (CIS CDM) held in the International Center of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation in Moscow, on the 25th anniversary of the formation of the Council of Defense Ministers.

Delegations from the Defense Ministries of Belarus, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Azerbaijan, Armenia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan and Uzbekistan also took part in the jubilee meeting, chaired by Minister of Defense of the Russian Federation, General of the Army Sergei Shoigu.

Before the meeting, the Heads of defense departments of the CIS states laid the foundation stone for the sculpture composition Tree of Life, the idea for which belongs to Russia’s Defense Minister S. Shoigu, and also planted spruce trees at the International Center of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian federation.

In the course of the meeting, addressing the Council participants, S. Shoigu noted the historic symbolism of the current meeting, which initiated stable and constructive interaction of the CIS member states.

“A quarter of a century ago, on May 26, 1992, a historic meeting took place in this hall, which marked the beginning of our cooperation within the Council of Defense Ministers. Thanks to joint efforts, in 25 years we managed to establish stable and constructive interaction in the military sphere on a wide range of issues,” – S. Shoigu said.

The meeting participants summed up the development of the 25-year multilateral military cooperation of the CIS member states.

As the Department of Information and Communications of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation reported, following the discussion, the Heads of defense departments adopted a statement in connection with the 25th anniversary of the CIS CDM.

The report notes that the meeting participants focused on the further organization of key joint activities in the military sphere. In particular, they discussed the participation of the armed forces of the Commonwealth states in the international military games of 2017, established the idea of ​​joint live firing training of the troops of the CIS united air defense system “Comradeship-in-arms 2017”, which will be held at the Ashuluk (Russia) and Sary-Shagan (Kazakhstan ) testing areas.

Along with this, the CIS CDM adopted a plan for joint activities of the Armed Forces of the CIS member states for 2018, which includes various forms of joint activities: command and staff training, training gatherings, field training and military professional skills competitions, educational olympiads and other systemic training of troops.

The report also states that the meeting supported the proposal of the Ministry of Defense of the Russian Federation to establish a Coordinating Committee under the CIS CDM on field training and approved the provision on it, reviewed the course of implementing the Concept of a unified military geoinformation system for the armed forces, analyzed the state of flight safety In the CIS member states for 2016, as well as approved the financial support of the CIS Joint Air Defense System.

The Heads of defense departments also focused on the military aspects of countering international terrorism, in particular – the creation of a system for conducting joint anti-terror activities, as well as adpted the Memorandum on developing cooperation in the study of the preservation and promotion of historical and cultural heritage in the military sphere.

The next meeting of the Council of the CIS Defence Ministers will be held in November in Dushanbe.
