Today, at the instruction of the Head of State, Prime Minister Bakytzhan Sagintayev took part in the opening ceremony of the Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway route in Baku (Azerbaijan).

The event was also attended by the President of Turkey R. Erdogan, the Prime Minister of Uzbekistan A. Aripov, Prime Minister of Georgia G. Kvirikashvili, Minister of Transport of Tajikistan H. Khudoyerzoda, and Minister of Railways of Turkmenistan D. Byashimov.

The opening ceremony included the ceremonial hammering in of the “Golden spike” and switch operation, as well as the unveiling of a commemorative plaque.

The BTK railway is an important section of the Trans-Caspian International Transport Corridor, it connects the railway networks of Azerbaijan, Georgia and Turkey. The introduction of the line will allow Kazakhstan obtaining new routes to the Black and Mediterranean Seas.

The new railway will expand the geography of cargo transportation along the corridor accessing Turkey and allow hauling two million containers annually through Kazakhstan by 2020.

The sections of the new Baku-Tbilisi-Kars railway corridor will also see the use Kazakhstan's locomotives produced by Lokomotiv Khurastyru Zauyty and Elektrovoz Khurastyru Zauyty. For these purposes, 10 locomotives have already been delivered and are operating, and by 2020 Kazakhstan will supply 40 cargo electric locomotives to Azerbaijan.
