Minister of Foreign Affairs Kairat Abdrakhmanov met with UN Under-Secretary-General, Executive Director of the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) Yury Fedotov.

The UN representative delegation arrived in Astana to participate in the 10th Review Meeting of the Memorandum of Understanding on Sub-regional Drug Control Cooperation in Central Asia. According to the interlocutors, the forthcoming meeting will give a new impetus to anti-drug cooperation in the region. Strengthening of cooperation is also urgently required due to the growing dynamics of the drug threat from Afghanistan.

It was stressed that a special importance in countering the drug threat holds the "Central Asian Regional Information and Coordination Center" (CARICC) project.

“CARICC makes an important contribution to enhancing control over the production, consumption and trafficking of narcotic drugs, psychotropic substances and precursors in Central Asia. In the 10 years of its existence, CARICC has achieved significant results and to date is the region’s sole effective information and coordination structure on combating drug trafficking,” – the Kazakh Foreign Minister said.

The meeting between K. Abdrakhmanov and CARICC Director Grigory Pustovitov covered issues related to regional interaction. The Head of the Almaty based Center expressed his gratitude to the Government of Kazakhstan for supporting and promoting the development of CARICC.

The interlocutors discussed the issues of improving the legal framework for regional cooperation, further institutionalization of the Center, strengthening cooperation with UNODC, donor countries, and counter-narcotics counterparts in other regions of the world.
