Minister of Religious Affairs and Civil Society of the Republic of Kazakhstan Nurlan Yermekbayev held a meeting today with the Director of the USAID Mission in Central Asia, Christopher Edwards.

The meeting also saw participation of Director of the USAID Representative Office in Kazakhstan, Alexander Lane, Chairwoman of the Civil Society Committee Aliya Galimova, Acting Chairman of the Committee on Religious Affairs Erkin Ongharbayev.

In the course of the the conversation, Nurlan Yermekbayev noted that thanks to the partnership relations between Kazakhstan and USAID, an effective interaction system was built, which allowed implementing socially significant projects in the civil sector.

The Minister focused on the provisions of the adopted Concept of State Policy in the Religious Sphere and the planned legislative changes.

In turn, the Director of the USAID mission in Central Asia, Christopher Edwards, noted the importance of bilateral partnership and positively assessed the work of the Ministry on the development of civil society.

After discussing promising areas of cooperation, the sides expressed their readiness to work together on preventing religious radicalism, as well as in the sphere of youth policy.

Recall: The USAID Agency began its activity in Kazakhstan in 1992. USAID, in partnership with the public and private sectors of Kazakhstan, is involved in activities to enhance economic diversification, encourage further democratic reforms and improve the healthcare system. With the support of USAID, a stable network of NGOs has been established to deal with various social issues, including the protection of citizens' rights and promotion of public interests.
