During today’s press conference following the Government meeting, Minister of National Economy Timur Suleimenov spoke about preventive measures to keep inflation within 5-7% until the end of 2018.

Timur Suleimenov recalled that in 2017 inflation amounted to 7.1%. According to preliminary results, in 2018 inflation will remain within 5-7%.

Answering the questions of journalists about the high prices for certain vegetables and fruits in the winter period, the Minister agreed that Kazakhstan still has a problem of the seasonality of supply and demand.

“We cannot ensure the same volume of supply of vegetables and fruits in December, January, February and March as in July, August, and September. Therefore, this particular seasonal surge was always observed in our country,” – T. Suleimenov said.

At the same time, he noted that the Ministry of National Economy, together with the Ministry of Agriculture is actively working on expanding the supply of vegetables and fruits. In particular, major work is under way to increase stocks, expand the number of warehouses, wholesale distribution and wholesale trade centers in all key cities and towns.

Another solution to the problem proposed by the Ministry of National Economy is the reduction of intermediary links. At the same time, T. Suleimenov stressed that it is not necessary to completely get rid of all mediators.

“Trade intermediation is an absolutely normal economic practice. Because not every farmer, not every farm is able to deliver and display their products on the shelves of bazaars and shopping centers which are 100-200 km away. Mediation is just right for this,” – Timur Suleimenov said.

The main thing, according to the Minister, is that this relationship does not become parasitical.

“Right now our Committee for the Regulation of Rural Monopolies and the Protection of Competition has legal levers: these are turn-over penalties and the seizure of monopoly income. While this year we did not initiate anything, we will closely monitor the development of the situation,” – the Minister summed up.
