The delegation of Kazakhstan led by Deputy Minister of Religious Affairs and Civil Society Abzal Nukenov took part in the VII Youth Forum of the UN Economic and Social Council in the city of New York on January 30-31, 2018.

The Youth Forum provides an opportunity for young people to participate in discussions related to the development of a global policy on topical development issues.

The plenary session of the forum on “The role of youth in building sustainable urban and rural communities” was addressed by Deputy Minister Abzal Nukenov, who briefed the participants on the implementation of youth policy in the Republic of Kazakhstan.

According to the Deputy Minister, today the Government of the country is actively working on developing youth infrastructure. Work is organized within two areas: promoting the interests of youth through the Councils for Youth Affairs under the President of the Republic of Kazakhstan and under Akimats, as well as assisting through the creation of youth resource centers and social services for the socialization of young people.

"For us, the institutions of youth self-management are of particular importance. These civil institutions are, in our opinion, the main driver of progress in advancing the interests of young people. Today we are initiating a number of measures aimed at stimulating the development of youth government committees. At the root of the solution of many problems is the youth itself, successful solution of problems depends on its initiative and activity, the capacity for self-management. Realizing this, the Kazakh Government is actively working today to increase youth activity,” – Abzal Nukenov said in his speech.

Globalization requires closer interaction and joint solutions. In this regard, the Kazakh delegation proposed to hold in 2020 in Kazakhstan a Global Conference on Youth Development and to create a special website to discuss the pressing problems of youth.

Within the framework of the forum, a number of meetings were held with representatives of the UN and other countries, including with the ECOSOC President Marie Chatardova and the UN Secretary General for Youth Affairs, Jayathma Wickramanayake.

More than 700 representatives of various countries, including ministers of youth policy, deputy ministers, heads of agencies from different UN member countries and heads of youth organizations take part in the forum.

Recall, the Economic and Social Council is at the heart of the work of the UN system in promoting all three aspects of sustainable development - economic, social and environmental. It is the central platform that facilitates discussion and the development of innovative thinking, consensus building on further activities, and coordination of efforts to achieve internationally coordinated goals.
