The 58th session of the International Atomic Energy Agency General Conference has started on September 22, 2014 in Vienna, Kazakhstan Foreign Ministry reports.

This main annual meeting of delegations from 162 member states will consider the IAEA Annual Report which covers Agency's activities in various fields of peaceful nuclear energy use, ensuring nuclear safety, safeguards and the nuclear non-proliferation regime. Delegates will also discuss the programme and budget of the Agency, and the staffing of the Secretariat.

The delegation of Kazakhstan is taking part in the General Conference and is headed by Mr. Vladimir Shkolnik, Minister of Energy. The Kazakh delegation also includes senior officials from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, NAC "Kazatomprom" JSC, National Nuclear Centre of Kazakhstan and other entities.

The statement delivered by the Kazakhstan delegation reflected on the achievements of our country in the field of nuclear disarmament and non-proliferation, effective cooperation between Kazakhstan and the IAEA in the field of peaceful nuclear energy use, nuclear medicine, rehabilitation of contaminated lands, and other issues. The intention of the country to construct its first nuclear power plant was announced. The Member States' attention was drawn to the initiatives of the President of Kazakhstan Nursultan Nazarbayev in the field of nuclear non-proliferation, as well as the ATOM Project.

The Minister V.Shkolnik held meetings with senior IAEA officials and the heads of delegations of key Agency's Member States to discuss wide-ranged bilateral and multilateral cooperation issues.

The National Nuclear Center's exhibition took place at the Vienna International Center for the whole period of General Conference. The work of the IAEA General Conference will continue until 26 September 2014.

The International Atomic Energy Agency was established in 1957. The Republic of Kazakhstan became the 121st IAEA Member State on 14 February 1994.
