Askar Mamin instructs to increase efficiency of water resources use

Tuesday, 05 October 2021, 11:03:48

The progress of construction and reconstruction of canals and reservoirs in the country was reviewed at the government session chaired by Prime Minister Askar Mamin.

Minister of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources Serikkali Brekeshev, Minister of Agriculture Yerbol Karashukeyev, Akim of Turkistan region Umirzak Shukeyev, of Almaty region — Amandyk Batalov, Kyzylorda region — Gulshara Abdykalikova presented their reports.

The Head of State Kassym-Jomart Kemelevich Tokayev set the task of expanding the area of irrigated land to 2.2 million hectares by 2025, and up to 3 million hectares by 2030. Today, the total volume of water withdrawn for the needs of the population and economic sectors is about 25 cubic kilometers. Every year the needs will increase, which requires efficient use of water, the introduction of the latest technologies, and the digitalization of the industry.

Only through automated distribution and transportation will the overconsumption of water be reduced by 1.2 cubic kilometers per year.

In this regard, in the next five years, measures will be taken to reconstruct 120 canals with a length of 2.3 thousand km and 9 large reservoirs with a total volume of 1.7 billion cubic meters will be built. At the regional level, modernization, repair and maintenance of existing hydraulic structures, wells will be carried out and wells in pastures.

“Construction of new and modernization of existing reservoirs and canals, as well as the use of water-saving technologies will provide an additional total collection of water in the amount of 6.4 cubic km. These measures are also reflected in the Zhasyl Kazakhstan National Project,’’ Mamin said.

The Head of Government instructed the Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources to develop a Roadmap for the construction of 9 large reservoirs, the reconstruction of 120 canals, and their digitalization within a month.

The Ministry of Agriculture and Ministry of Ecology, Geology and Natural Resources, together with regional akimats, were instructed to develop regional roadmaps for the introduction of water-saving technologies in irrigated areas until 2025 within a month, as well as to take measures to modernize existing hydraulic structures and wells in pastures.

The Ministry of Agriculture, together with the akimats of the Almaty, Turkistan and Kyzylorda regions, was instructed to work out the issue of a gradual reduction in the area under crops of moisture-loving crops — rice and cotton.
